Alachua Parks & Gardens
Peacock Springs State Park is situated in Fort White, about 15 miles north and west of Alachua, FL. One of the main features of this park is the underwater cave system, a popular attraction with scuba divers. A number of sink holes and underground springs can also be found at this 288-acre recreation area.
Ichetucknee Springs State Park is located about 15 miles northwest of Alachua, FL. The Ichetucknee Springs is composed of a series of aquifers that discharge 233 million gallons of water a day, water which in turm feeds the Ichetucknee River. Canoeing, kayaking and hiking are all popular activities at this park.
O'Leno State Park is located in High Springs, about 12 miles southeast of Alachua, FL. This park is next to the Santa Fe River, which disappears underground in O'Leno and resurfaces on a smaller scale in River Rise Preserve State Park, which is a short drive from O'Leno. Open from 8am to sunset, 365 days a year.
Located about 15 miles southwest of Alachua, the Dudley Farm Historic State Park provides school children with the opportunity to see how a traditional farm works. Flower gardens, vegetable gardens and crop fields are on-site, as well as the Dudley farmhouse with relics on display from a bygone era.
Devils Millhopper Geological State Park offers visitors the chance to see a massive sinkhole, formed when the roof to an underground cavern collapsed. The 120-foot deep sinkhole can be explored from boardwalks and stairways, or by traversing a four-foot wide nature trail that follows the rim of the hole.
