Greater Gainesville at a Glance
Greater Gainesville is made up of incredible parks full of wildlife, a number
of small towns and the city of Gainesville.
Paynes
Prairie Preserve State Park is a 21,000 acre terrain where sandhill cranes,
wild Spanish horses, and reintroduced American bison run free around a marsh
basin. A great recreational activity involves swimming and diving in the waters
and underwater caves of Ginnie
Springs on the Santa Fe River. The town of Micanopy
is full of interesting historical buildings and antique stores and was the setting
for Michael J. Fox’s movie Doc Hollywood. The Gainesville
Raceway presents drag racing and other motor sports for interested visitors.
The University
of Florida is also located in Gainesville, lending the city an academic
air. Several golf courses in the Greater Gainesville area are available for
public play, including the Quail
Heights Country Club in Lake
City, Florida.
